The basilica traces its origins back to the era of Duke Liudolf of Swabia in the 10th century. It's a unique gem, being the only church in the world dedicated to both Saint Peter and Saint Alexander. In 982, Aschaffenburg, along with the former abbey, became part of Mainz. This integration played a significant role in influencing the Mainz archbishop's choice of residence, as the church and its monastic college became central to the area.
